Bonnie and Donald's Portrait Session (Test Shoot)
What a beautiful morning to be out taking portraits and this time having two willing
victims volunteers on hand meant that I could try some couple poses using natural light.
Bonnie and Donald were great fun and seemed to be enjoying themselves throughout the shoot, doing whatever I asked them to without any problems. They even jumped into the river when I asked at one point, although it was just a trickle of water at the time.
I had a plan to mainly concentrate on using the natural light and specifically working with the sun on such a lovely cloud free morning.
First set up saw us in the river and to be honest I wasn't too keen on what the light was doing. It was nicely highlighting the leaves in the background but was a bit lifeless on their faces due to lack of direction. However when I turned round and saw the backlit branches and the sun streaming through the leaves I knew this would be a better position to get into. So we all swapped round and made the most of the great light and background (see 2nd image below). Always a good tip to check what the view looks like behind you as it may be better than what's in front of you.
A short walk after that took us to a relatively new part of the park which was fantastic for portraits. I'd scouted this location previously with my son when out for a walk and knew it would be great. Multiple locations all within a few yards. Reflections, back light and directional light with plenty of interesting backgrounds and foregrounds to choose from.
Stephanie was again doing her magic with the reflector which really worked well to punch light and direction into Bonnie and Donald's faces. A quick check with the light meter and we were ready to try all the set-ups.
We could have stayed there for much longer as it was such a nice location and day. Thanks again to Bonnie and Donald for being great fun to photograph.
If you have a spare hour or two and fancy doing something similar get in touch. It's open to individuals or couples and you don't need to have any modeling experience. There's no pressure on anyone as it's a test shoot and hopefully, like Bonnie and Donald, you'll have a laugh doing it. At the end of the day you get a few images home with you and I get to try out something different. So win win.
Here's a few images from the shoot.
